Excerpt from Play

Scene 1, Act I

Setting: Johnston’s living room (nicely decorated).  Marcia and Toni are sitting on the sofa.  They both are dressed casually (jeans, skirt or similar).

Marcia: (sitting on sofa.  Marcia is always dressed impeccably, even in jeans. Her nails, make-up and clothes are flawless. She has a certain air about her).  Girl, I know, I’m just trying to hang in there.

Toni: (sitting on sofa, drinking a soda).  Tell me about it. But at least you got a man.  So what has it been, nine years you and Sterling have been married?

Marcia: It will be ten in six months.

Toni: Well, don’t sound so enthusiastic. What’s wrong with you? Sterling’s a good man.

Marcia: You don’t have to live with him.

Toni: We’ve been friends for over 15 years, so don’t act like I haven’t been here.  The man is good to you.

Marcia: Whatever.

Toni: Look, you have a beautiful home, a wonderful son and a good husband, what more do you want?

Marcia: (rising from the sofa) - I want it all.  (walking toward the kitchen table to get the potato chips).

Toni: All of what?

Marcia: All (sitting back on the sofa and getting a few chips out and then passes the bag to Toni).

Toni: (taking a couple chips out of the bag).  See, Pastor just finished teaching last week about being greedy.  What’s that scripture?  Uh...Uh....

Marcia: Uh...- be quiet.

Toni: I remember now. It was something like, “he who is greedy for gain makes trouble for his own house”.  I’m telling you, don’t mess up a good thing.

Marcia: (sarcastically)  Any man looks good to someone who doesn’t have a man.

Toni: Now, you know good and well that if I just wanted a man, I could have several.  But that’s not me.

Marcia: Whatever.  What time is it?

Toni: A little after 1:00.  What time do we have to go back and pick up Marlon from the birthday party?

Marcia: They said they would be back at 5:00.

Toni: Hey, have you gone over yet and greeted your new neighbor?

Marcia: Please, you know I’m not into that “Leave It to Beaver" stuff.  I’ll meet her in time.

Toni: Is it just her?

Marcia: From what I can tell. I haven’t seen any man, other than the moving men and I haven’t seen any children.

Toni: I saw her when I pulled up, standing in her front yard half dressed.

Marcia: Look, are we going to the mall or what?

(doorbell rings.  Marcia rises to go see who is at the door)

Toni: I’m ready.  Are you expecting company?

Marcia: Nope.  (opening the door) Can I help you?

Precious: (seen but not heard.  She has a strong southern accent and talks slower than Toni and Marcia) - Hi, I’m so sorry to bother you but I moved in across the street earlier this week...

Toni: (quickly rising from the sofa and going to the door to see what the new neighbor looks like).

Marcia: Oh, how are you doing?  Come in. I’m Marcia and this is my nosey friend Toni.

Precious: (enters the house.  She’s smiling and has on tight a mini skirt.)  I’m Precious.

Toni: (looking Precious up and down) (sarcastically) Precious?  Mmm hump.  Is that your real name?

Precious: Yes, it is.  Precious Bradley (big friendly smile).

Marcia: (giving Toni a stern look).  Would you like to have a seat?

Precious: No thanks, I can’t.  I’m swamped, unpacking and things. I have not been able to locate my hammer and I was wondering if I could borrow yours?

Marcia: Oh, sure.  Hold on a minute and let me get it.  (disappears briefly into the back).

Toni: (interrogating Precious) - You’re not from around here.  Where are you from?

Precious: Mt. Olive, North Carolina.

Toni: Mt. Olive, where in the world is that?

Precious:  It's a little over an hour from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Toni:  You’re a long way from home aren’t you?

Precious: Not really.

Toni: What made you move here? Running away from your husband or something?

Precious: (being evasive) Or something.

Marcia: (enters with the hammer in her hand.)  Here you go.  You can just return it tomorrow. We’re getting ready to leave.

Precious:   (taking the hammer).  Thank you and I’ll bring it back tomorrow. (starting to exit)  It was very nice to meet you both.

 Marcia: You, too.

 Toni: (looking at Precious)  Mmm...humph.

 Precious: (exits).

Toni: (Shoves the door closed.  Turns to face Marcia) You better look out for that little hussy.

Marcia: (getting her purse off the table) You know you are crazy.  Why were you so rude to the woman?

Scene I, Act II

Setting: Johnston’s living room.  Same day, around 7:30 p.m. A pizza box is sitting on the kitchen table. Sterling is sitting on the sofa with a remote control in his hand. Marlon is sitting on the floor playing with his gameboy or cars or some type of toy.

Marlon: Daddy, when is Mom coming home?  I want to show her what I won at the birthday party.

Sterling: She’ll be home soon (glancing at his watch).

Marlon: Are we going to Sunday School in the morning or just 11:00 service?

Sterling: Sunday School and I know you have your scripture memorized as much as we have practiced this week.

Marlon: Yes, sir.  Do I have to say it in front of everybody?

Sterling: Just in front of your classmates.

Marlon: Oh, I thought we were going to have to say it in front of the whole church.

Sterling: No, it is for your class.

(Door opens and Marcia enters with shopping bags)

Marlon: (runs to the doorway to meet her) Hey Mom!  I had so much fun at the party.  I thought you and Aunt Toni were going to come back to pick me up.

Marcia: Hello sweetie.  I’m so glad you had fun.

Sterling: (still seated on the sofa) Good Evening, Marcia.

Marcia: Hi.  (sitting the bags on the floor near the kitchen table).  I see you had pizza.  I told you I was going to cook.

Sterling: Baby, I’ve had a long day and I was hungry.  It’s almost 8:00 and I wasn’t sure when you would be home (rising to go and give her a hug).

Marlon: (looking through the bags)  Mom, what do you have in the bags?

Marcia: Leave those alone.  (She and Marlon embrace but little visible affection).

Sterling: (Sits at the kitchen table near the bags).

Marlon: Did you buy me anything?

Marcia: (hugging Marlon).  Whew, you need to go take your bath.  Where all did you go?

Marlon: (excitedly) We went horseback ridding and to eat pizza.
